20231102 W-trek day 3 – Chileno

Date: 20231102

Time: 8:10 – 16:30

Distance: 18,9 km

Overnight stay: Chileno Camping, Torres del Paine

Walk

No big breakfast today, only some cookies and chocolate nuts, with water. I save the can of Fanta I bought yesterday for later today when I need a sugar shot.

Today I am not only blown away by the scenery but also literally by the fierce winds. I already think the wind is strong, man am I in for a surprise later today.

And then you are ‘on the beach’, that is if you count big pebbles as beach. I walk a small section very near to the water. The wind is so strong that the water gets blown from the lake.

I meet the couple from Utah again, they stayed at Cuernos and are now going up to Britanico. They made it to the first suspension bridge at glacier Grey.

After about 3.5 kilometers, and not 2.5 kilometers as is shown on all the signs, I reach Cuernos. Time for coffee, Nescafé but better than nothing.

Before I leave, I put the rain cover on my backpack because there are some dark clouds in front of me. But luckily they drift away from me. I only feel some drops. This is good because the rain cover comes of the backpack, probably because of the shrubs and trees that are growing over the path.

I take regular stops when going up, this is good to take in the view and to catch my breath. I remember when doing the South West Coast Path this was not necessary, but then again that was almost 6 years ago…

Just like yesterday I take a break after I cross a suspension bridge, here I notice that I am off track, but given the amount of other hikers I don’t worry. There is also a horse track here and I think Gaia took that one when it created the route. A little bit later I am back on track again.

I see sparrows catching the gusts of wind and flying away at very high speed. Looks like a very good adrenaline rush (do birds have adrenaline? I checked, they do).

I decided to have a big break when there are less than 7 kilometers to walk. When I do there are 6 kilometers left and I sit on a rock and have my sugar shot and a protein bar. A couple passes by that I already met a couple of times today. The guy asks if he should take a picture of me. So today not only scenic pictures, but also one or two with me in it.

Then it goes up to Chileno, a steep section of a few kilometers and exposed to the wind. Here I learn that the fierce wind of today was nothing but a breeze. At some sections going up the wind gusts are so strong that I am glad I have my hiking poles, otherwise I would have been blown from my socks (sorry for the literal translation 🙂

Raindrops are falling but not too much and they are welcome to bring some extra cooling.
At some point I see a lot of people coming from another path to the left. I think they also come from Cuernos, I probably could have taken another route, maybe with less height differences. But then again this was a nice trip.

I made it! Before half past four I am at Chileno and check-in for my tent. While checking in I also order my first and very well deserved beer of today. First things first.
At first I sit outside but with these winds that is not very nice. So I go inside the overcrowded restaurant and I find a spot to sit. Here I meet Renata who is walking the trek with here two Brazilian friends. I passed them a couple of times today and she asks if it was easy for me because it looked like I was walking the trek without any difficulty. I assure her that it wasn’t as easy as it looked. Renata is originally from Brazil and we talk about al lot of things. Sitting with Renata and her friends is a couple with a woman from Peru. She tells me to go to Peru, like Lise and Sven did last year. She also tells me to go to restaurant Central in Lima, the number one restaurant in the world. Expensive but worth it. I checked it and in 2023, it earned the No. 1 spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking.
They are making plans to go up to Tres Picos tomorrow and they want to leave at 3 am! They ask me to join them but this is really too early for me. I am having breakfast at 7 am, my first decent meal in two days.

After taking a shower I go back to the restaurant to have another beer and to type my adventures of the day.

Weather

Today it was mostly cloudy with some short sunny periods, some drops of rain and a lot of wind.

Songtext of the day

The sparrows were flying fast and high today. Here is Flying High by Captain Hollywood Project.

We ‘re flying high
We ‘re flying right up to the sky
We fly so high
We’re flying right up to the sky

We fly so high, we fly so high

Yes I don’t need no stress
‘Cause that’s the kind of stuff that makes a mess
Breakin’ me down and takin’ me to the test
Keepin’ me brother from givin’ my best
Gotta chill gotta chill gotta gotta kill
Before I cannot feel anything that’s goin’ down
Turnin’ my head around and around
Takin’ me to the highest level
Diggin’ my own grave with a shovel
Many boss remain in my brain
Cover me truly and sing.
I cannot speak, I cannot speak
I wake up sweatin’ up in my sleep
That’s why, that’s why I’m flyin’ high.

We’re flying high (We’re flying high)
We’re flying right up to the sky
We fly so high (We fly so high)
We’re flying right up to the sky
With an extra station from the ground
The stars are shining round and round
So high we’re flying right up to the sky.
We’re flying high (We fly so high, we fly so high)
We’re flying high.

Yeah that’s the way I got to go
When everybody’s singin’ my mo and mo
Pickin’ up the record in a record store
Hollywood, Hollywood on the radio
Jammin’, jammin’ forty people bang me
It’s me and gets his slam in right
So why don’t you play all night
Puttin’ on the jeans and the jeans all tight
Gotta go gotta go gotta go now
Try to relax and I don’t know how
Listenin’ to the sound I like to hear best
The sound that makes me cheer
I’m gettin’ away from a everyday cry
Runnin’ away from hardcore lie
I’m flyin’, I’m flyin’ high.

We’re flying high (We’re flying high)
We’re flying right up to the sky
We fly so high (We fly so high)
We’re flying right up to the sky
With an extra station from the ground
The stars are shining round and round
So high we’re flying right up to the sky.
We’re flying high (We fly so high, we fly so high)
We’re flying high.

We’re flying high (We’re flying high)
We’re flying right up to the sky
We fly so high (We fly so high)
We’re flying right up to the sky
With an extra station from the ground
The stars are shining round and round
So high we’re flying right up to the sky.
We’re flying high (We fly so high, we fly so high)
We’re flying high.

20231101 W-trek day 2 – Britanico

Date: 20231101

Time: 8:35 – 17:50

Distance: 22,8 km

Overnight stay: Francés Camping, Torres del Paine

Walk

After breakfast I pack backpack and leave for Britanico. It is a bit of a puzzle how I have to start. They changed the paths. But I find my way.

The good news is that I am not completely daft. I found my sun glasses, they were hiding in the upper compartment of Sven’s backpack. This is good because when I start walking I have the sun right in front of me.

With the heavy backpack, walking sticks are definitely a good idea. Yesterday I had them with me, but didn’t need them. Today I do!

After walking for some time I check my TwoNav to see where I am on the route. The answer is simple, I am not. I am off track, a few kilometers back the path split and I followed the sign Italiano, which is the next camp I will reach. I check the map on my TwoNav and I am quite sure this path, a new path?, will also bring me to my destination and I continue.

I see again a lot of dead trees.

When I cross a river, I take a break at the other side of the bridge. I already filled my bottle from a stream earlier on. Just before the bridge the other path, the one I planned, joined my path. I am on track again. It now also gets more crowded. The other path is shorter but less scenic and most hikers apparently take the short route.

Campamento Italiano is only a short distance away and I have a break there as well. My shirt and the inside of my coat are soaking wet.
At Italiano I leave my backpack and continue with only a water bottle and my walking sticks up to mirador Britanico.

I follow the river that I crossed before and I pass a campsite where they warn you not to drink the water from near the campsite…

It goes up and up and I have nice views on the mountains, the river and glacier Frances. It is a touch hike up. I would have never done this with the backpack.

Finally I reach Britanico, a bunch of rocks protruding from the landscape and giving perfect 360° views on the Frances valley and the mountains in all directions.

The way down is slightly easier. I hear a thunder, it is snow breaking free up on the mountain. I can still see the snow cloud where it happened.

I reach Italiano again, pick up my backpack and walk the rest to camp Frances where I booked a tent. It is a tent on poles and I have one whole tent by myself, which is nice. Yesterday I got an email that they upgraded me. No idea what that means, but I do have the tent closest to the reception and not one all the way down or up.

One minor thing is the shower, after some warm water, it soon falls back to only cold water. So a cold shower it is.

The restaurant is also not very much. First of all I have to walk about 1 kilometer down and if you didn’t pre-book a meal, like I did, you cannot sit in the restaurant. You can buy a beer and take it with you or drink it outside, like I did.

So not much to do here, which means I will go to bed early. This is no problem because I am very tired after these two days.

Weather

It was warm and sunny today. Fine walking weather, even a little too warm at times in the sun.

Songtext of the day

Today, with all the dead trees, I walked through the valley of death which reminded me of a song by Coolio, Gangsta’s Paradise that has a songtext that begins with this:

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there’s nothin’ left
‘Cause I’ve been blastin’ and laughin’ so long, that
Even my momma thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain’t never crossed a man that didn’t deserve it
Me be treated like a punk, you know that’s unheard of
You better watch how you talkin’ and where you walkin’
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip, but I gotta loc
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke, fool
I’m the kinda G the little homies wanna be like
On my knees in the night, sayin’ prayers in the streetlight

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise
Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise
Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise
Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Look at the situation they got me facin’
I can’t live a normal life, I was raised by the state
So I gotta be down with the hood team
Too much television watchin’ got me chasin’ dreams
I’m a educated fool with money on my mind
Got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I’m a loc’d out gangsta, set trippin’ banger
And my homies is down so don’t arouse my anger
Fool, death ain’t nothin’ but a heart beat away
I’m livin’ life do or die, what can I say?
I’m 23 now, but will I live to see 24?
The way things is goin’ I don’t know

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise
Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise
Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise
Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Power and the money, money and the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody’s runnin’, but half of them ain’t lookin’
It’s goin’ on in the kitchen, but I don’t know what’s cookin’
They say I gotta learn, but nobody’s here to teach me
If they can’t understand it, how can they reach me?
I guess they can’t, I guess they won’t
I guess they frontin’, that’s why I know my life is out of luck, fool!

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?

20231031 W-trek day 1 – Grey

Date: 20231031

Time: 7:30 – 17:30

Distance: 30,7 km

Overnight stay: Paine Grande, Torres del Paine

Walk

I am up at 6:15 to get breakfast at 6:30 and have an early start. It froze last night.

I follow a rocky path. Early in the day I don’t meet a lot of people. That changes when it gets later.

It is sunny, blue skies all around. I realize that I forgot my sun glasses. They are still in my other backpack that I left with Ada. I am so focused on the stuff I normally don’t need, that I forget half of the stuff I normally have. I also forgot my hat, but that is still at home in Baarlo. The sun glasses are no problem today, I have the sun in my back when I walk up to Grey as well as when I return. And after Refugio Grey I walk under the trees.

It is warm in the sun, but chilly or even cold in the shade. That also changes during the day. In the afternoon it is f*cking hot in the sun and there is almost no shade.

All the dead trees make the scenery a little spooky. Today I walk a few times through the woods, especially the last part after Refugio Grey. Probably the fire did not get here. If it wasn’t for the fire, I would have walked a lot more through the woods. As bad as I feel about the fire, I do like the different scenery it created.

At Laguna los Patos I take off my vest, it’s getting too warm.

I made GPX tracks of all the planned routes but they are not really necessary. One cannot get lost here because there is only one path. However, I get other useful information like where I am and what altitudes to expect.

The path continues down through a small stream, I walk in the water.
Now I enter a section that is very steep. I have to use my hands and I really have to watch out because it can be slippery when wet.

I meet two Australian guys and talk a bit to one of them. He has a good tip, at the end of my route I have to continue for about 5 minutes after the 2nd suspension bridge to get good views on the glacier.

After a little more than 3 hours I reach Refugio Grey, time for a coffee. At first they scare me, the bar is closed for cleaning. However they also have a minimarket where I can get a decent coffee that I drink outside at a picknick table.

When I continue, I first make a detour to a mirador (viewpoint) to watch the glacier from afar. The I continue my route for 3 more miradors. At the first mirador I hear thunder, a piece of ice breaks of the glacier, I didn’t see it, but I heard it.

I fill my water bottle from a stream. I read and they told me the water is drinkable and I believe them. Still I bought a bottle with a filter, just to be sure.

I pass two suspension bridges. The first one crosses a small stream that probably can get bigger. The second one is longer and higher and has its own private glacier coming down from the mountain. Probably a temporary glacier.

Finally I reach my target, which was also the tip from the Australian guy. Good tip by the way. From this mirador you have a fabulous view on the glacier. I stay a short while to take in the view and eat a protein bar.

The way back to Refugio Grey goes way faster than the way up. I meet the couple from Utah again. They are on their way up but they don’t know if they have enough time. They also have to go back to Paine Grande. I tell them how far it is and that there are some steep sections. I am afraid they are not going to make it.

At Refugio Grey I have a well-deserved beer, a Torres del Pain by Austral.

I meet two girls with devil horns and I make the sign of the horns with my hand and they wish me happy Halloween! I totally forgot that it is Halloween. In Santiago and Valparaíso you cannot forget, but here that is no problem.

Everybody keeps shouting ice-cream at me today and I keep shouting back Ola. This joke probably doesn’t work for people outside of the Netherlands but I am not going to explain…

The rest of the track back to Paine Grande is rather uneventful. I refill my water bottle once more and I don’t stop at all the viewpoints, I did that already the first time around.

I notice in several parts that there are multiple parallel tracks to choose from. I have seen this in my other walks also. If there is room, people tend to make their own path if there is a reason. For instance water on the path, too hard or too close to the edge. It is sometimes hard to tell what the original path was. If there is a hard section, then that is probably the original path. Otherwise it is the longer path.

The last part up is hard, I already walked 25 kilometers through harsh terrain and I feel it in the legs. Once I start going down, the last kilometers, it gets better. Even though I am tired and my pace slows down, I still overtake a lot of people. That means their normal pace is less than my tired pace…

In total I walked 30.5 kilometers today. A bit more than the 28 I planned.

Weather

The weather was very good today, sunny and dry, even a little too warm in the afternoon.

Songtext of the day

Lots of ice today, a whole glacier of ice! Therefore I have picked Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice.

Yo VIP, let’s kick it

Ice, ice, baby
Ice, ice, baby

Alright stop, collaborate and listen
Ice is back with the brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
“Will it ever stop?” Yo, I don’t know
Turn off the lights, huh, and I’ll glow
To the extreme, I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance, rush the speaker that booms
I’m killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it, you better gangway
You better hit the bullseye, the kid don’t play
And if there was a problem, yo, I’ll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice, ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby

Now that the party is jumpin’
With the bass kicked in and the Vegas are pumpin’
Quick to the point, to the point, no fakin’
Cookin’ MCs like a pound of bacon
Burnin’ ‘em if you’re not quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi-hat with a souped up tempo
I’m on a roll, it’s time to go solo
Rollin’ in my 5.0
With the ragtop down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby, wavin’ just to say hi
“Did you stop?” No, I just drove by
Kept on, pursuin’ to the next stop
I busted a left and I’m headin’ to the next stop
The block was dead, yo, so I continued to
A1A Beachfront Avenue
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis
Jealous, ‘cause I’m out getting mine
Shay with a gauge and Vanilla with a 9
Ready for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because they’re full of eight ball
Gunshots raged out like a bell
I grabbed my 9, all I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper, the avenue’s packed
I’m trying to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene, you know what I mean?
They passed me up, confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem, yo, I’ll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice, ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby
Ice, ice, baby

Take heed ‘cause I’m a lyrical poet
Miami’s on the scene just in case you didn’t know it
My town that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
‘Cause my style’s like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed, this is a hell of a concept
We make it hype and you want to step
With this. Shay plays on the fade
Slice like a ninja, cut like a razor blade
So fast, other DJs say, “Damn!”
If rhyme was a drug I’d sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when it’s time to get loose
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem yo I’ll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby
Vanilla Ice, ice, baby
Ice ice, baby
Vanilla Ice

Yo man, let’s get out of here
Word to your mother
Ice, ice, baby (Too cold)
Ice, ice, baby (Too cold)
Ice, ice, baby (Too cold)
Ice, ice, baby (Too cold, too cold)
Ice, ice, baby (Too cold, too cold)
Ice, ice, baby (Too cold, too cold)

20231030 Pudeto

Date: 20231030

Time: 14:50 – 16:15

Distance: 6.5 km

Overnight stay: Paine Grande

Walk

I have a very early breakfast, 4:00. I am not the only one, a handful of people are also awake and eating.

The hotel shuttle brings me to the airport, a quick transfer over roads that have definitely seen better times and I have the shuttle to myself.

Checking in my backpack and security are a breeze and I find myself at the gate with more than an hour and a half to spare. I walk around a bit and have a double espresso at Starbucks.

The flight takes 3 hours and is rather uneventful, which is good 🙂 In Puerto Natales I take a transfer to the bus station. The driver drives veeery carefully but we make it. I even have time to walk into town to get a hat, I forgot mine.

The trip with the bus from Puerto Natales to Pudeto was spectacular with all the mountains covered with snow and the lakes surrounding us. In total there were about 20-25 passengers on the bus. About half of them leave the bus at Laguna Amarga.

In the beginning the road was smooth and well maintained. This changed once we were out in the open. It reminded me of the time when I was just a boy, a long time ago, and I accompanied my father in his truck, the old Büssing, on the Belgian roads.
Later on there are again stretches of road that are well maintained.

In the distance I see a bird circling in the air. Given the distance it must be a huge bird. Might be a Condor but I can’t make sure from the bus.

And then the road just ends and we are on a dirt road with pot holes and all… for about 20 kilometers.

The signs beside the road show Ruta del Fin del Mundo, or in good German am Arsch der Welt!

When we reach Guardería Laguna Amarga, everybody has to get out of the bus and show their park ticket to the park rangers. The bus drives through the ‘park gate’ and we all get back in, except for the passengers that walk the W-trek in the other direction. They wait here for their next transfer.

The rest of us continue our journey to Pudeto. From here on it is only dirt roads. They even have hectometer markers! We follow a winding road through the mountains with nice views. Then in the middle of nowhere there is about 50 meters of smooth and paved road. And then again for about 100 meters. Probably because of the slope of the road.

I think I can see the route that I am going to take the day after tomorrow. I do see the occasional Lama, or Alpaca, and then there is a bunch of them and they are in the middle of the road.

When we arrive at Pudeto, I first go to the cafeteria for a chicken sandwich and a beer. Since I have to wait 3 hours before the catamaran leaves, I go for a walk to see the waterfall, Salto Grande, a splendid view. I continue to the next viewpoint with nice views of the mountains that I will be walking next to the coming days. There is another viewpoint, Mirador Cuernos, but although I try, I don’t make it that far. I have to go back to make sure I don’t miss the catamaran. And I have time for another beer 🙂

What strikes me is that all trees are dead, they are just white skeletons. I have seen this before in the Czech Republic and it was caused by acid rain. I ask one of the park rangers why the trees are dead. Alas she doesn’t speak English but Google is your friend, if you are a park ranger and have Internet here at the end of the world. She explains that there was a fire caused by humans in 2011. It burned 17000 hectares and lasted for 2 months.

Time to catch the catamaran. The trip takes half an hour and we get spectacular views of the mountains from different sides. There are not many people on board. I talk to a couple from Utah, they arrived yesterday and it is also their first time in South America. She takes my picture and I take one of them.
When we arrive at Paine Grande, there is a very long line of people waiting to get on the catamaran. I wonder if there is room enough but if I look a little later, the catamaran is on its way back and the line in completely gone.

I check in at the refugio and they show me ‘my’ room. It’s not mine of course, I have to share it with 5 other people, although I am the only one when I get there.

First things first, I look for the bar and get a beer at a table at the window with a good view on the mountains. I am near the corner and there are windows in two directions. One of them reflects the mountains so it looks like there are even more! This is where I finish this text. Putting it on-line is a challenge. I have to buy a Wi-Fi connection and the power fails. And again…

Weather

Nice weather, warm and dry.

Songtext of the day

All the dead trees I saw today lead me to the song with the same title, Dead Trees by From First to Last.

Here we are, in the ashes of my desire
All the pieces fall from my chest down into the fire
When we hold on to a feeling so good
All the puzzle pieces will scatter and burn in the mold
I watched the feathers drop to the floor

You were everything that was killing me but I survived
Now you’re just a memory stuck in the history of my life
We live, bleed, we die
The moment shared is now a lie

I wanna know, what is this love?
I watched it grow into the mud
I wait impatiently to get away
Now get the fuck away from me

(Woah oh ah, woah ah ah ah)
You were everything that was killing me but I survived
(Woah oh ah, woah ah ah ah)
Now you’re just a memory stuck in the history of my life
We live, we bleed, we die
The moment shared is now a lie

Here we are in the ashes of my desire
All the pieces fall from my chest down into the fire

(Woah oh ah, woah ah ah ah)
You were everything that was killing me but I survived
(Woah oh ah, woah ah ah ah)
Now you’re just a memory stuck in the history of my life
You were everything that was killing me but I survived
(Woah oh ah, woah ah ah ah)
Our love is just a memory stuck in the regret of the fire
We live, we bleed, we die
The moment shared is now a lie

20231029 Valparaíso

Date: 20231029

Time: 10:05 – 14:05

Distance: 6.5 km

Overnight stay: Mítico departamento dúplex, Valparaíso

Walk

It’s raining! We wanted to go for a walk, but the weather forecast doesn’t look too good. Instead we walk to La Sebastiana Museo de Pablo Neruda, one of the houses of the poet, consul and Nobel price winner Pablo Neruda. He build a vey nice house on the hill with perfect views over the hills and harbor of Valparaíso.
The way up is steep and long, so we adapt our pace to Ada. She goes up slow but steady.

Closeby La Sebastiana is the Plaza de Los Poetas, a small square with 3 statues of well known Chilean poets. Here is also a restaurant where we have a drink, Apfelstrudel and Schwarzwälder Kirsch cake. Apparently some German influences here.

We walk back to ocean level and up again to our apartment, using the ascensor this time. It’s time for me to go. I already had everything packed for the W-trek and leave today for Santiago. I booked a hotel near the airport because I need to catch a plane to Puerto Natales tomorrow morning at 6:30 meaning that I have to be at the airport at 4:30.

Ada and Sandy accompany me to the train and also go on board because they want to go to Viña del Mar. I leave the train a few stops earlier to go to the bus terminal. After saying goodbye to the girls I first have to put the rain cover on my backpack because it is raining.

I walk to the bus terminal, just to find out I have to wait for more than an hour and a half for a bus.
Time to grab something to eat. I try a typical Chilean dish, Cazuela de Vacuno, a sort of soup with one big piece of meat, a potato and big piece of pumpkin in it. A good choice!

Weather

As stated, it was rainy weather today. Temperature was fine, it was just very wet…

Songtext of the day

We visited the house of a poet today. Sly and the Family Stone have a very appropriate song and text for this, Poet.

My only weapon is my pen
And the frame of mind I’m in
I’m a songwriter, A poet
I’m a songwriter, A poet
And the things I flash on Everyday
They all reflect On what I say
I’m a songwriter I’m a poet
I’m a songwriter, Oh yeah a poet

Time: 12:30 – 19:25

Distance: 10.5 km

Overnight stay: Mítico departamento dúplex, Valparaíso

Walk

Today we, Sandy, Ada and I, want to walk to Laguna Verde, a 12 kilometer walk. We start by going uphill and keep to the main roads.

At some point I walk behind a guardrail and a guy runs to me from the street, grabs my necklace, rips it of my neck and runs to a car that is waiting for him. That I got robbed is bad, but the necklace was from my grandmother and is irreplaceable. FUCK!!!

We continue our walk because there is nothing else to do. When we are two streets further a man from a minimarket shouts to us to get our attention. He tells us that it is not safe to go further up. If we continue we will probably be robbed of all our possessions.

Change of plans, we walk downhill a go to Cerro Alegre, one of the most touristic zones of Valparaiso, a neighborhood with lots of color, where we have a beer. From there we walk to the Piano steps and Cerro Conception where we have a very nice view on the lower part of the city and the harbor. In fact when we look down, we are directly above the Valparaíso Beer House.

In the distance I see a graveyard and we find our way there. There are 3 graveyards here, Cementerio N° 1 de Valparaíso, Cementerio N° 2 de Valparaíso and in the middle Cementerio de Disidentes. The last one is open and we walk along the old graves. Most of the graves and the graveyard in general could use some maintenance.

The other graveyards are closed so we decide to find our way downhill to have something to drink at the Valparaíso Beer House. We find some very narrow stairs down and we descend to ocean level. The stairs are probably not meant for tourists like us but the gate at the bottom can be opened, so we don’t need to go back up.

After our pause we go to the harbor and from there we walk along the coast, or rather the harbor, to Playa San Mateo where we find nice views over the ocean and the coast line. We go back the same way we came and finish the day in a Chinese restaurant where we have a good meal.

Weather

Today was colder than yesterday, mainly because it was cloudy all day. It was dry and only at the beginning and the end of the day we needed our jackets.

Songtext of the day

They took my grandmother’s necklace today, which pisses me off to no end. But it is what it is, so here is Dreadlock Holiday by 10CC. Read the text and you will understand why.

I was walkin’ down the street
Concentratin’ on truckin’ right
I heard a dark voice beside of me
And I looked round in a state of fright
I saw four faces one mad
A brother from the gutter
They looked me up and down a bit
And turned to each other

I say
I don’t like cricket oh no
I love it
I don’t like cricket oh no
I love it
Don’t you walk thru my words
You got to show some respect
Don’t you walk thru my words
‘Cause you ain’t heard me out yet

Well he looked down at my silver chain
He said I’ll give you one dollar
I said you’ve got to be jokin’ man
It was a present from me Mother
He said I like it I want it
I’ll take it off your hands
And you’ll be sorry you crossed me
You’d better understand that you’re alone
A long way from home

And I say
I don’t like reggae no no
I love it
I don’t like reggae oh no
I love it
Don’t you cramp me style
Don’t you queer on me pitch
Don’t you walk thru my words
‘Cause you ain’t heard me out yet

I hurried back to the swimming pool
Sinkin’ pina coladas
I heard a dark voice beside me say
Would you like something harder
She said I’ve got it you want it
My harvest is the best
And if you try it you’ll like it
And wallow in a Dreadlock Holiday

And I say
Don’t like Jamaica oh no
I love her
Don’t like Jamaica oh no
I love her oh yea
Don’t you walk thru her words
You got to show some respect
Don’t you walk thru her words
‘Cause you ain’t heard her out yet

I don’t like cricket
I love it (Dreadlock Holiday)
I don’t like reggae
I love it (Dreadlock Holiday)
Don’t like Jamaica
I love her (Dreadlock Holiday)

I hurried back to the swimming pool

20231027 Concón – Viña del Mar

Date: 20231027

Time: 12:00 – 19:05

Distance: 18,7 km

Overnight stay: Mítico departamento dúplex, Valparaíso

Walk

Today we, Ada and I, are going for a walk. The plan is to go to Concón and then walk back to Viña del Mar where Ada will catch the metro to Valparaíso and I will walk back the last part as well.

After breakfast we go down with the ascensor and walk to Plaza Sotomayor. I decided to give Uber one last try and lo and behold, within one minute the driver shows up and delivers us in Concón. Here we start our walk, but since I gave up some random address in Concón, we first have to walk down to the ocean.

We walk along the ocean side which is very rocky here. We see all kinds of birds like the Peruvian pelican. At one point we also see 3 South American sea lions. When we continue walking it looks like there will be no bar or restaurant for quite some time, so we head back and go to the restaurant where the sea lions were. On the terrace we are very close to the sea lions and we enjoy our drinks. That is, I ordered a Michelada because I thought that it was a beer brand. The waiter pointed to the other beers they had, but I did not understand, my Spanish is not that well. When he came to serve, I got a glass with salt on the rim and some lemon juice (I think) in it. He then put in some sauce and some tabasco and I could choose one of the beers they had. I went for the Calafate ale and he put that in as well. Time to look up what Michelada means, apparently it is a cocktail with beer in it! Now that I had it, I also tried it. It was not too bad, but not something I will repeat. Luckily there was still some beer left in the bottle that I drank after I had finished the cocktail.

I notice that they have a lot of Hottentot Fig growing along the coast. I have seen this also in Portugal, the Hottentot Fig poses a serious ecological problem by forming vast monospecific zones and hence lowering biodiversity

We continued our walk along the coast by entering a section along the dunes of Concón. We already saw these from the car but now we walked on the other side, the ocean side. It was a nice stretch to walk with again a nice rocky coast until the road was blocked. As walkers, we could pass the barriers they put up and continued. But not very far because after 200 meters or so the road was completely blocked because of road works. So back again, we looked for a path into the dunes, but there were only options that were very steep and hard to do and I did not know if they would lead us to something. After a little less than 2 kilometers, there was a road going up the hill and we followed that through the sub urbs of Concón.

Once on the top, we found an Italian restaurant where we had a drink, a real beer for me this time, and something to snack, lemon pie and tiramisu.

Once we passed the dunes, we headed down again. From our high position we could see the other end of the road block. The good thing about the detour was that we had some magnificent views from the hill over the ocean and the coast.

We did not make it to the center of Viña del Mar however. After 18.5 kilometers Ada’s feet were sore. Also Sandy arrived at Valparaíso to spent the weekend with us and we didn’t want to let her wait too long. At a bus stop we ordered an Uber and that went well again. After 5-6 minutes the driver picked us up and brought us to the Valparaíso Beer House, where we found Sandy.

We had diner at a nice Peruvian restaurant and went straight to our apartment after that.

Weather

It started out a bit chilly today, but while we were walking it got warmer and the sun came out, which made it quite warm. I even got a burn on my face, not seriously, but still.

Songtext of the day

Today we walked along the ocean, therefore now The Ocean by U2.

A picture in grey
Dorian Gray
Just me by the sea

And I felt like a star
I felt the world could go far
If they listened to what I said
The sea

Washes my feet
Washes my feet
Splashes the sole of my shoes

20231025 Santiago de Chile

Date: 20231025

Time: 11:05 – 17:40

Distance: 15,9 km (+ 2,9 km metro)

Overnight stay: Hotel Casa Zañartu, Santiago de Chile

Walk

After having a good night sleep, we first have breakfast in our hotel. After breakfast, Sandy is joining us and since today we have a full day in Santiago, Sandy is going to show us the city.

First we walk to the Palacio de la Moneda, the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. We also were here yesterday and now I know why there is so much police in this area. In front of the palacio there is a huge flag of Chile at the beginning of Paseo Bulnes, a nice street were you can buy a lot of stuff at small stalls. This is also the street where the beer café is where Ada and I ended up last evening.

The traffic lights for pedestrians work almost in the same way as at home, red means you have to watch out yourself and if there is no traffic, just cross the street. However, green is a little more tricky. If it turns green, it is dangerous. There might still be traffic that passes with high speed, including busses. They probably tried to catch the orange light and got the dark orange one…

We walk through the city and reach the faculty of natural sciences. They have a very modern building and Sandy arranges that we can go inside, after we have registered with our passports. In the basement they have a lot of sport facilities, including among others basketball, squash, judo, tennis and even a swimming pool.

Just around the corner is Parque O’Higgins. In one corner of the park there is Fantasilandia, the biggest amusement park of Chile. Here we also find the Movistar Arena, one of the locations were currently the Juegos Panamericanos are held, the Olympics for the American continents.

Sandy has a location planned to have lunch and we take the metro from Parque O’Higgins to Santa Isabel to get there. We are now in Barrio Italia and we walk to Av. Italia where there are plenty of small bars and restaurants. The first place where we sit down has no beer. That’s no good, so we walk a little further to Malacria. Here we have a very good lunch and I can enjoy a good beer with it.

After lunch we continue in to the Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, the faculty where Sandy studies. We get a tour of the faculty and have drink at the cafeteria. Ada has walked enough for today, so we split up. Ada and Sandy go back to our hotel, using the metro. I walk back with a small detour along the river.

Weather

The weather was very good, sunny with some clouds now and then. In the sun it was rather warm, but sometimes we got a welcome breeze.

Songtext of the day

Everybody talks Spanish here and we made a nice stroll today, so here is Spanish Stroll by Mink DeVille.

Hey, Mr. Jim, I can see the shape you’re in
Finger on your eyebrow
And left hand on your hip
Thinking that you’re such a lady k**er
Think you’re so slick!
Alright
Brother Johnny, he caught a plane and he got on it
Now he’s a razor in the wind
And he got a pistol in his pocket
They say the man is crazy on the West Coast
Lord, there ain’t no doubt about it
Well, alright
Sister Sue, tell me, baby, what are we gonna do
She said take two candles
And then you burn them out
Make a paper boat, light it and send it out
Send it out now
Spanish Stroll
Spanish Stroll
Spanish Stroll
Hey, Rosita! Donde vas con mi carro Rosita?

Tu sabes que te quiero
Pero ti me quitas todo
Ya te robasta mi television y mi radio
Y ahora quiere llevarse mi carro
No me haga asi, rosita
Ven aqui
Ehi, estese aqui al lado rosita
Spanish Stroll
Mira aqui!
Hey Johny! Yeah, Tenth Street Johny
We’ve been looking for you, man
Everybody told me you had moved uptown
Hey, you wanna go for a ride?
I’m going uptown myself
For what?
Yeah, ain’t it right?
Yeah, one time for Tito Puente, one time
Are you ready?
Yeah, of course we cannot leave out, Mr Ray Baretto
Are you ready? Are you ready? Are you ready?

20230814 Johannisberg – Kiedrich

Datum: 20230814

Tijd: 10:25 – 14:45

Afstand: 16,9 km

Overnachting: thuis

Wandeling

Helaas is in Kiedrich alles dicht, Montag Ruhetag…

Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
While you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes

I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees

Into the trees

Suddenly I stop
But I know it’s too late
I’m lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It’s always the same
I’m running towards nothing
Again and again and again and again
